Livin’ Local

16 Dec

As I sit at home with a bum leg I decided to start putting out a webisode series. So I sent my good friend Sam Cohen off with the new HD GoPro and told him to get some cool shots. I’m going to create a new episode at least every other week. My goal is to capture what it is like to be a local skier up Little Cottonwood Canyon and what our view of skiing is. Enjoy!

It’s almost winter!!

18 Nov

So it’s been a while since the last time I posted and a lot has happened. It has started to snow more frequently around the Wasatch and the mountains are maintaining a fresh sheet of snow. I have found my self hiking for preseason turns with my friends numerous times and it just keeps getting better. The last time I went out it was thigh deep pow at the top of Collins chair in Alta!

Preseason pow with Jake Garcia, John Collinson, Neil Howard and I

Other than skiing I have been training with the Snowbird Freeride Team at Black Diamond Gymnastics. It is a super fun time and will hopefully do good things for this winter. Check out the edit that Nate Cahoon made…

I also did a little photo shoot with Mike Schirf, Taylor Lyman, and John Collinson. We got some pretty rad shots and check back for some more in the future.

Teton Trip

16 Feb

I forgot to mention one thing in the last post.

This summer I was accepted to do a mountaineering course in the Tetons. I couldn’t pass the opportunity up so in June I started the camps along with:

Duncan Adams             (Breckenridge, CO)

Leo Ahrens                  (Salt Lake City, UT)

Evan Barrett                (Livingston, MT)

Danika Comey             (Jackson, WY)

Mike Gardner               (Ridgway, CO)

Logan Jamison             (Salt Lake City, UT)

Christian Mandahl         (Salt Lake City,UT)

Ross Peck                    (Bozeman, MT)

Andrew Pollard            (Sandy,UT)

Samantha Willits           (Ridgway, CO)

And with legends Andrew Mclean, Hans Johnstone, Mark Holbrook, Bean Bowers and Nat Patridge as guides.

The first two days we accessed terrain located in Garnet Canyon just off the back side of Jackson Hole ski resort. The next day we made the trek to the meadows located at the base of  Nez Perce, the Grand Teton, and the Middle Teton. This location became base camp for the next two nights. The next day we hiked a long couloir in waist deep pow! When we reached about 50 feet from the top a small slide hit us head on. All our gear was scattered every where and I ended up loosing a glove. Other than that everything went great. Rebecca Huntington ( a powder mag journalist) joined us on our last day. She wrote a great little article that appeared in the latest edition of Powder Magazine.

Super delayed post

15 Feb

Alright, I have been really really lazy and have not posted in a really long time. So with that said I am going to do a very brief recap of what I have been up to. This will probably be out of order but you get the idea.

So this season I am taking school off for about three months (Nov 24-Mar 9). This way I can ski all day, every day during some of the best months of the year.  The first month we ( little cottonwood canyon) received a regular dose of the drug scientifically known as ”snow”.  I tried to keep my addiction on the down low but word got out.

Here survelance cameras caught me feeding the habit.

Others tried to keep it a secret too but many where caught red handed, as shown by the Alta photo of the day archives

The one major down side to the start of the season was the very high avalanche danger. It basically brought all plans of going out of bounds to a hault. Even skiing in bounds was scary at times. On December 14th an in-bounds avalanche took the life of a local woman at Snowbird. For me this was very scary because my ski team and I had been skiing that same area all morning long and the slide happened right after we went to lunch.

As the season rolled on the conditions started to improve and as of today everything is basically back to normal. I continued to seek out fresh pow, big airs and fun jumps. I also spent some time at Park City learning new tricks that I can take into the back country. One of my favorite accomplishments was my first double back flip attempt.  I didn’t quite land it, so now I am determined to try it again.  After weeks of messing around it was time to back into competition mode.stevenspasscomp2

This year I am taking part in the IFSA Junior Freesking Tour. The first stop I attended was Stevens Pass, Washington. The first day of competition I hit a little cliff into what seemed like fresh snow. When I landed I punched through and ended up washing out. This put me into something like 17th place for the next day. After watching the rest of the competitors run I was able to decide on a better line choice for the next day.

I ended up skiing my line really well the second day and received the highest scoring run of the comp. With the second day points added up I was able to move into a tie for 5th place. I also received a ravid raven nomination (similar to a sick bird nomination).

With Stevens done my next stop is Crusty Butt. I mean I am off to Crested Butte. I’m looking forward to fresh snow and hopefully a fun venue!
